Opportunity

Most social platforms are built around who you know. HobbySwap is built around what you love.People with shared hobbies have an instant foundation for genuine connection — but no mainstream platform is designed for that. Forums are fragmented, Facebook groups are noisy, and algorithmic feeds prioritise engagement over relevance. There was a clear gap for a platform where interests come first.We designed and built HobbySwap from scratch as our own product — conceiving the idea, owning the architecture, and taking it all the way to the App Store and Google Play.

Approach

With full ownership over both the product vision and its engineering, every decision was ours — from stack choices to UX to deployment strategy. We chose Flutter for mobile to deliver a consistent, high-quality experience on iOS and Android from a single codebase. The backend runs on Node.js and MongoDB for the flexibility a content-rich, real-time social platform demands. The web experience is built on Angular. A CI/CD pipeline via GitHub Actions kept the three-person team shipping fast without manual overhead. Engagement was a first-class concern from day one — not an afterthought. Leaderboards, badges, mini-games, and community tools were designed into the core experience, not bolted on later.

Solution

1. Hobby-Based Discovery Users build interest profiles and discover communities and people based on shared hobbies — not follower counts or algorithmic reach. 2. Real-Time Messaging Direct and community messaging with real-time delivery across mobile and web. 2. Communities Users can create, join, and engage with hobby-focused communities — with tools for content sharing, discussion, and group activity. 3. Engagement Layer A badge system, mini-games, and leaderboards reward genuine participation and drive retention without dark patterns. 4. Cross-Platform Mobile & Web A single Flutter codebase covers iOS and Android. An Angular web app completes the experience — all backed by the same API.

Technical Highlights

1. Interest-Based Matching Architecture Connecting users by what they care about, not who they already know. We designed a discovery system built around hobby relationships — surfacing relevant communities and users without relying on social graph proximity or paid reach. 2. Real-Time Engagement at Scale Messaging and live updates across a multi-surface platform. Real-time interactions across Flutter mobile and Angular web — consistent, without duplicating logic. 3. Gamification System Retention through genuine play, not dark patterns. Badges, mini-games, and leaderboards built as a cohesive engagement layer — rewarding participation rather than passive scrolling. 4. CI/CD & Deployment Pipeline Shipping fast as a small team. Automated builds and deployments across mobile and web via GitHub Actions — keeping a three-person team moving without manual overhead.

Impact

HobbySwap is live on the App Store, Google Play, and the web. It is the clearest demonstration of what we build when we have full creative and technical ownership — from idea to production, as a lean, self-directed team.
